Stats3. EMPLOYMENT COST INDEX

Employment Cost Index

The Employment Cost Index (ECI) is a quarterly measure of changes in compensation costs, which include wages & salaries, employer costs for employee benefits, and total compensation. Published by the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the ECI is one of the principal economic indicators relating to employment costs.

Among the statistics produced by BLS, ECI is the preferred measure of annual increases in wages & salaries for salary planning because it is a measure of direct wages & salaries. It is preferable to using the CPI as a method of inflating salaries because the CPI is not a measure of wages, but of prices.
