Turnover
General Information about Turnover and Separation Rates
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) tracks turnover through its Separation Rates series. BLS defines separations as terminations from employment occurring any time during the reference month from all three of these categories:
 | Quits (voluntary separations); |

Layoffs and discharges (involuntary separations initiated by the employer including layoffs with no intent to rehire; formal layoffs lasting or expected to last more than 7 days; discharges resulting from mergers, downsizing, or closings; firings or other discharges for cause; terminations of permanent or short-term employees; and terminations of seasonal employees); and

Other separations (retirements, transfers to other locations, deaths, and
separations due to disability). Separations do not include transfers within the location
or employees on strike. |

Using the Separation
Rate
To calculate your organization’s separation rate, count the total separations for the year; divide by your organization’s total employment plus job openings, then multiply by 100. Your organization’s separation rate could be compared to the annual numbers in the table above.
